Product Description

The Ultimate Mini Music System

Audioengine HD3’s are hard to beat if you’re looking for a good pair of speakers for your desk or bookshelf. The HD Series was designed for the way people listen to music today— streaming wirelessly, digital downloads, vinyl, etc. Are you looking for versatility and multi-functionality in compact mini music systems? HD3 is the real deal as it sets a new standard because of its ability to play all of your music from any device.

No Missed Connections

And why should you choose HD3’s? Ease of use and Bluetooth. HD3 can connect to your phone or tablet with ease and has aptX for high-quality streaming. Of course, the main purpose of a pair of speakers like this is probably going to be for your desk or home audio setup, but having the option to switch to Bluetooth and maintain that high-quality sound is a handy feature to have. Connections with HD3 are available in many ways: wirelessly or wired, digital or analog. Wireless setup is a breeze and only takes a  minute. And if you’re using HD3 on your desktop, connect with a USB cable. The USB input bypasses your computer’s built-in low-quality headphone jack for a high-end listening experience. But if you’re not keen on USB or wireless you can still use any audio cable to connect.

Handy and Your Go-To System

HD3 will probably get most of its use connected to a computer, that’s not the main new feature that we thought deserved to be tested. So to explore more functionality, try to connect the speaker via Bluetooth to phones, tablets, and computers. Easy setup, straightforward and useful features and wide stereo sound make HD3 your go-to music system. HD3 is expandable, so if you want deeper bass just connect up your subwoofer. No matter how you listen to music, HD3 has you covered.

Plug In Your Headphones

Audioengine stunned hi-fi and audio lovers by including a dedicated high-performance headphone output to HD3 so you can listen and not wake the neighbors. Its audiophile-quality headphone amplifier delivers high-end sound that drives even the most-demanding headphones.

Retro-Forward Design

The added Bluetooth functionality might not be your main priority when it comes to bookshelf speakers like these, but having the added functionality is always better than not having it. HD3 was designed for audio performance, but speakers obviously also need to look good, so Audioengine have included furniture-grade wood veneers, aluminum trim accents, and detachable magnetic grills that blend with any decor. You have a lot of options available in Satin Black as well as real Walnut and Cherry wood with no additional cost if you want to really show them off. In this wireless future we’re heading towards, there’s no reason NOT to get these if you’re looking to embellish your desk with future-proof speakers.

Small Speakers That Pack a Punch

Built-in power amplifiers save space and eliminate the need to connect HD3 to a stereo receiver or external power amp. Just plug it into an outlet and then connect the passive right speaker to the left one and you’re ready to go. On the front of the left speaker is the power/volume knob, followed by a 3.5mm input if you want to plug in headphones, and then a tiny Bluetooth pairing button because yes, these are Bluetooth. The only connection you’ll find on the right speaker is the input to connect to the left one. All internal components of the HD3 are designed and tuned together, so you’ll get Audioengine’s Signature Sound and a much more efficient system than traditional separate speakers and amplifier.

DAGOGO – HD3 REVIEW

“So now Audioengine gives you a real choice when it comes to powered desktop speakers. If you only want to spend $249, they still sell the A2 Powered Speakers. If you want a little better sounding speaker with better looks, a headphone amp with volume control, and every feature I could want, then there is the HD3. They are the best desktop speakers I have ever heard.”

METAL-FI – HD3 REVIEW

“As a complete package, it’s hard to argue with the HD3s. They sound great for their size and if you want more oomph in the low-end then all you have to do is pick up a sub (AE’s S8 for instance would fit the bill nicely).”

“I’ve heard some pretty bad Bluetooth speakers over the last few years. The race to the bottom has left the low-end flooded with poor reproductions. Audioengine was already cranking out quality speakers, but didn’t rush to meet the wireless trend… my favorite stereo Bluetooth setup to date.”

CUSTOM COMPONENTS

Audioengine designs and manufactures our own speaker drivers and other critical components. In other words, the HD3 is not a “box-built” system with off-the-shelf parts, but includes custom-designed components constructed to our specifications. What we do not fabricate directly inside our factories we have made to our specific designs – parts such as circuit boards, transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses, for example.

EFFICIENT INTEGRATED DESIGN

The speaker cabinets, drivers, innovative bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all critically tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. We build all this goodness into the left speaker cabinet to make it super-easy to connect your smartphone, tablet, computer, TV, network player – or any other audio product.

BUILT-IN B1 AND D1

We’ve taken features from two of our best-selling products, the B1 aptX® Bluetooth® Receiver and the D1 24-bit DAC, and combined some of this circuitry with advanced speaker components to achieve a complete high-end analog and digital audio system.

HIGH-QUALITY BLUETOOTH AUDIO

The Bluetooth built into the HD3 powered speakers features aptX coding which is an advanced Bluetooth audio codec with very impressive sound. And even if your phone or tablet doesn’t have aptX, the HD3 Bluetooth solution is backwards-compatible with SBC and AAC codecs, so you can wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device and still enjoy all your music. High-fidelity Bluetooth aptX that really works and sounds great. Here’s why:

Extended wireless range – Most Bluetooth implementations have very limited range, typically within just one room. But with careful signal management circuitry and antenna tuning, we offer a superior solution that has up to 3 times the range of standard Bluetooth for multi-room use, with no degradation in audio quality.

24-bit DAC – The HD3 Bluetooth receiver and USB input both utilize the PCM 5102 DAC, widely known for its low-noise and high-fidelity. The PCM 5102 is used as an upsampling DAC and will pad all bit depths to 24-bits, achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the PCM 5102, the fact that digital signal is upsampled to 24-bits – as well as the added benefit of onboard triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering – the HD3 Bluetooth implementation presents impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics with a noticeable improvement over other Bluetooth devices.

HD3 HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER

The HD3 contains a high-performance headphone amplifier based on the OPA2134 low-noise opamp. This amp is able to provide low-impedance, high-fidelity audio and a 2-volt output which easily drives a wide range of headphones.

AMPLIFIER DESIGN

The amplifiers in powered Audioengine speakers are located in the left speaker and are a conservatively-rated class A/B analog monoblock design. This is a more traditional speaker/amplifier configuration which provides excellent quality audio and greater flexibility. All circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection.

DRIVER DESIGNS

Audioengine uses audiophile-quality, ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is obviously very strong, which means the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels.

FURNITURE-GRADE FINISHES

The HD3 cabinets are available in several handsome finishes, including walnut and cherry veneers as well as satin black paint, offering a wide choice for complementing room furnishings. Also included are detachable grills that add further aesthetic advantages as they are firmly held in place with hidden neodymium magnets for a clean look.

SHIELDING

Both of HD3’s speaker drivers are directly magnetically-shielded.

ABOUT BLUETOOTH® AND APTX®

Our Bluetooth products easily connect to any of your devices that have Bluetooth, but to get the best sound possible we recommend using a device that supports Bluetooth aptX. Find out more about aptX here: csr.com/products/aptx

And if you’re looking for a new smartphone, tablet, or computer with aptX or want to look up your device and see if it supports aptX, go here to check out what’s available: aptx.com/products/browse/categories

And for iPad or iPhone users that don’t have aptX, don’t despair! MacOS (MacBook, iMac, Mac mini) include Bluetooth aptX, however if you use an iPhone or iPad, Apple generally uses the AAC codec and doesn’t support aptX. AAC sounds really good as well and you’ll also get the extra benefit of our upsampling 24-bit DAC, so you won’t be disappointed by the sound quality if you use an iOS device with any of our Bluetooth products.
